Shangu Zuri -A play on the Swahili phrase “ Shanga Zangu Mzuri” meaning “My Good Beads” was established in 2022.
Our Founder Martina was born in Nairobi, Kenya, and is a descendent of the Abagusii tribe, where beading and soapstone artistry has been in practice for generations.
Historically, the Abagusii women crafted jewelry out of locally sourced materials such as ostrich egg-shells, sea shells, cowry shells, seeds, animal bones and horns, leather and skins for use in ritual ceremonies.
The Egetinti (long beaded head chain) was worn in initiation ceremonies, while anklets with iron bells were worn during the Ribina ceremonies as part of a rain summoning dance.
While times have changed and most of the Abagusii traditions have long been lost to modernization, Shangu Zuri was founded with the vision of merging African traditional beading with modern jewelry trends, creating functional statement pieces fit for everyday wear.
